Asparagus Soup

June 4, 2014 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

1 tbsp of coconut oil

3 green onions, sliced – fresh from the garden!

3 small red potatoes, cubed– organic preferred

¾ of a bunch of asparagus, cleaned, broken into pieces

1 quart of organic chicken broth

½ cup of water

Melt coconut oil in soup pot over medium heat

Saute onions in pot

Add red potatoes, chicken broth, and water, bring to boil

Add asparagus when potatoes almost tender.

Blend with hand blender, food processor or blender. I kept the tips out of the blender step (that’s why you see chunks in the soup pot!)

Enjoy!

Diet or lifestyle change?

March 21, 2012 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

Since diet has become a bad word, many people have changed over to ‘lifestyle change’.  But how do you know which you are doing?

Here’s my opinion.

If you’re doing it to lose weight, it’s a diet.  If you’re doing it to improve your health, it’s a lifestyle change.

If you really want to know why you’re doing it, look at how you are measuring your success.

Are you getting on the scale?  Or are you evaluating your energy, sleep and cholesterol levels?

Snacking that lasts

March 6, 2012 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

Most snacks are grain based, sugar based, or just plain high in calories.

Here’s an idea.  Season and bake up some beans or peas.  Loaded with fiber, they have staying power.  They are also low in fat and calories.

  • 15 oz can of beans/peas, drained and well-rinsed
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder

(you can use any seasonings that you like – plain old salt and pepper works well)

1  .Toss the beans with the seasoning and oil (you can skip the oil too)

2.  Spread them out on a cookie sheet and bake in a preheated 400 F oven until crisp (about an hour).

3.  Keep an eye on them, and shake them a few times.

These are a great way to add legumes to a salad – crunchy and full of flavour.

Vegetarian or Paleo?

February 22, 2012 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

The Paleo diet is gaining popularity right now.  Not surprising as we were due for another surge in nutritional theory.

I just want to say that nobody really knows what diet is best.  There are a lot of theories, and a lot of convincing theories.  There are lots of research papers that support different diets for health promotion.

Here are the consistencies in all of them:

1.  Reduce the amount of refined carbohydrates (flour and sugar- not just white, but all)

2. Dramatically increase the amount of fruit and vegetables consumed.

3. Change the fats in your diet to olive, flax, and fish oil.

There is not one diet that works for everybody.  Try out a diet and see what your body says.  Not just in weight, but in energy, mood, sleep quality, and blood

The Path to Permanent Weight Loss

February 15, 2012 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

I loved teaching the Learn How to Eat, Not How to Diet program.  Every week I was giving the wonderful gift of being with people who so openly shared their struggles and successes with eating and body image.

The program is on hiatus until I figure out how to share my thoughts and ideas about what leads to permanent weight loss.  I am on a personal quest of finding out what works.

I have shared about Geneen Roth in the past – a brilliant author that shares openly about her struggles to stop dieting and be a healthy weight.

Now I want to share about another program that I have experienced by Tony Robbins.  It is called The Path To Permanent Weight Loss.  What had me purchase the program was that it is not a diet program.  It is a ‘head’ program.

I listen to the CD’s at least a couple of times a week as I still learn something new each time that I listen.  He presents women who have come to seminars wanting to lose weight.  He takes them through a process (just talking) to understand what is driving them to the behaviour of over-eating.  I learned something about myself from each of the women presented.

The last CD has a process of action to move towards a more authentic way of being.  I did the process a few weeks ago.  The very next day, each person that I saw told me how beautiful that I looked.  Not one of them knew that I had done this program.

As with anything, participation in the process is key.  If you are ready to really be honest and look at what you believe to be true that is leading you to overeat, this is the program for you.  It was worth every penny and more.

At our clinic I use acupuncture primarily for hormone regulation, infertility, and during pregnancies.

There are acupuncture points on the body that have traditionally been used to help prepare for labour. In a recent journal review acupuncture was found to be of some benefit in improving cervical maturity. I already knew this and have had lots of success.

So, yes, it is a thing.
