Do This, Not That – Spring Tips

April 14, 2014 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

We are exposed to so many chemicals in our modern society so the small things you can do to reduce your exposure will go a long way to keeping you and your family as healthy as possible. Here’s a little list of things you can slowly do or change at home for a healthier environment.

Do This Not That
Wear slippers or have indoor shoes Avoid wearing your shoes indoors – they pick up lots of chemicals, pesticides, and germs from outside
Air your dry-leaning out in your garage or car trunk for a week Don’t bring your dry-cleaning into the house right away
Use essential oils, soy or beeswax candles, use baking soda to deodorize Avoid using air fresheners or most commercial scented candles
Use plain soap and water for cleaning when possible, use watered-down vinegar instead of anti-microbial products Avoid scented cleaning supplies and laundry detergent
Use zero- or low-VOC paints Avoid paint that isn’t labeled zero- or low-VOC
Heat food on the stove in a stainless steel or glass pot or cast-iron pan Avoid Teflon-coated pans or re-heating food in plastic in the microwave

David Suzuki…Remember The Big Picture

November 18, 2009 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

I had the pleasure of attending the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors annual convention Nov 13-15 in Toronto. Furthermore, it was an honour to have David Suzuki kick off the weekend with a powerful presentation, which was open to the public.

David was passionate and eloquent as he described our earth and how humans are the species that have had the most impact on the planet. Some scientists say it’s too late and we have irreversibly damaged our home. However, David says to them “shut up and get out of the way,” it is never too late to make a change. And it’s important to remember the big picture – we should all have the same goal – to live in a healthy place. Governments need to listen to what Canadians truly want.

What kind of Canada do you want to live in? What do you want Barrie to be like in 25 – 30 years? Would you like to be able to drink from Lake Simcoe? Would you like to not worry about the air we breathe when we are standing within sight of highway 400? Would you like to know that your food is free from chemicals? Would you like to be sure that your health problems are not caused by environmental pollution, chemicals or even the houses we live in?

We can all agree that we want a beautiful, clean, healthy place to live, work and raise our children. If we all agree on that, then we have a common goal we can work towards.

The take home message for me?
There are small, simple things I can do at home and at our wellness centre to start making an impact on our environment and people’s health. Also, it is up to us to let our governments know that where we live and how clean it is matters to us and it should matter to them and their families as well.

I would like to encourage a discussion on our environment and our health. Please post a comment and become a follower of our blog to continue this conversation. Together, change will make a difference.

I'm missing my husband right now. Trapped on either side of a closed border isn't what we imagined for our marriage. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

But here we are.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We know that a lot of you are dealing with situations that are making you unhappy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Give yourself extra care right now. Sleep more. Eat warm foods that nourish your body. Rest. Give yourself a break. This is hard. But we're doing it.
Strength People used to tell me I was so strong. Strength

People used to tell me I was so strong.

But to me it was just getting up and putting one foot in front of another.

I did it for my kids. And I also did it for that tiny flicker of hope that was inside. That hope that things would one day be different and I would feel better.

Lately I’ve been needing that strength again.

These uncertain times. The unpredictable nature of our everyday lives has been taking a toll on my mental health again.

Again I need to turn to that tiny flicker of hope. That one day things will be different.

You are stronger than you think. You are.

Choose a fun way or container to serve the food.

Here we did a tea party for lunch on my grandmothers china.

When they were younger I would use ice cube trays and put little nibbles of food in each hole.

What about a picnic on the floor?

How about eating breakfast for dinner?

What about a bowl sandwich? All the good stuff without the bread?

Sometimes switching up the environment or what they are eating on can help.

Save this for later to remind yourself to switch things up. 😊

I’m feeling such gratitude right now. I’m so l I’m feeling such gratitude right now. I’m so lucky I love what I do. I’m so fortunate to have amazing women trust me with their fertility, their health, and then their baby’s health.

During this past year of fear and uncertainty, many people have turned to gratitude practices to cope.

🙏🏻

Research shows that when we express gratitude, our brains release dopamine and serotonin - happy hormones.

🙏🏻

Other studies have shown that people who have regular gratitude practices are healthier, happier, and have better relationships.

🙏🏻

Why not add this to your morning or evening routine? Write down 3 different things you are grateful for. And if you want more support for your mental health, I’m here for you. I’ve got many natural tools in my toolbox to help.

I’m here for you.

I polled my mom tribe (link in bio if you want to I polled my mom tribe (link in bio if you want to join us on Facebook), and asked them what they want more of in 2021.

These moms want more health, laughter, love, and money. But most of all, they want more joy.

This past year saw a rise in more mental health issues. 50% of Canadians reported their mental health worsened. 1 in 10 said it had worsened "a lot" because of Covid-19.

So, of course you want more joy.

How are we going to get it?

I'd like you to find 10 minutes in your day. 10 little minutes to plug into your joy. Your first day you can write down the things that used to bring you joy or that currently do. The next day you can try one of those things.

What little thing can you do tomorrow that will bring you a little joy?
