DHEA and cognitive function

July 11, 2011 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

DHEA supplementation shows promise for older women.  The group receiving the DHEA took it for 6 months.  At the end, they had higher DHEA levels and higher testosterone levels but not estradiol levels, compared to baseline.

Cognitive scores increased and activities of daily living were maintained in the DHEA group but deteriorated in the control group.

This was a very small study of only 12 women aged 65-90.

Published in Geriatr Gerontol Int. 2010 Oct;10(4):280-7.
