Top 5 Books to Read During Pregnancy

April 23, 2013 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

These are the top 5 books I recommend women and their partners read while they are pregnant. These are a combination of books to prepare for a natural birth as well as what to do with the baby after it’s born and breastfeeding.

I want women to know that they have the capability to have safe and natural births. The media and movies make it look like a scary, impossible thing. However, our bodies know what to do and so do our babies. Trust in nature.

Enjoy reading and planning for your baby and life thereafter!

1. Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin

2. The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin

3. Bountiful, Beautiful, Blissful by Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa

4. The Baby Book by The Sears family

5. The Womanly art of Breastfeeding by La Leche League International

Natural treatment for OCD

April 15, 2013 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

This study took OCD patients that weren’t responding to medication and added a natural treatment, NAC.  They found that it augmented the response to the medications.  Love it when both approaches are used together.

Gluten free cookies

April 10, 2013 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

Our new Rotation diet attempts to cook with one or two ‘grains’ at a time.  This has led me down the path to new recipes.  Currently I am working on finding recipes with buckwheat for Day 2 of our rotation.

This chocolate chip cookie recipe is AMAZING!  For sure a new family favorite.

GF cookies

The only changes that I made are:

  1. I replaced the egg with 1 tsp egg replacer in 1 Tbsp warm water
  2. Since my hubby hates mint I used vanilla extract in his batch instead of mint extract

Happy Baking 🙂 – Dr. Kerri

What is infertility?

April 5, 2013 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

The definition of infertility that I learned in school was ‘failing to fall pregnant within one year of having regular unprotected intercourse’.

Then a patient asked me what ‘regular intercourse’ meant?  How often was that?

I have to admit that I didn’t know what the ‘regular’ amount of sex was.

According to Assisted Human Reproduction Canada, 80% of heterosexual couples having unprotected sex 2-3 times per week will get pregnant in 1 year.

So there you have it.  Two to three times a week is regular sex.

For many, I dare to say most, of my fertility patients, that is a lot of sex.  And maybe that is part of the issue.  Once couples start ‘trying’ for a baby, they (mostly the women) start to time sex based on “when is ovulation”?

When a women ovulates varies greatly.  So then it becomes “do we have sex everyday or every other day?” and “what day should we start having sex on?”.

And so the anxiety and complications of fertility begin.  In an attempt to have sex on ‘the right day’, intimacy becomes robotic and stressful.  Often men don’t want to perform on demand to a women who is clearly not into them just what they have to deposit.  Tensions rise.  Away we go.

So as much as sex 2-3 times a week may seem like a lot to fit into your schedule, it’s a lot less stressful than ‘timed on-demand’ sex and it will likely yield better results.

Buckwheat Crepes

April 3, 2013 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

Next time I will double the batch because these didn’t last!  I would like to freeze some to see how they hold up.
Buckwheat has a very characteristic flavour. It’s earthy and bold.   It’s also one of the few gluten free flours that is sturdy enough on it’s own – no need to add starch or gum.
My son ate his crepes with syrup, my husband and I rolled them up with preserves.

These would make great gluten free sandwich wraps too.

Gluten-free Buckwheat Crepes

  • 1/2 cup buckwheat flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp egg replacer whisked into 2 Tbsp warm water
  • 1 cup hemp milk (or any milk of your choice)
  • 1 Tbsp oil

Whisk together the flour, salt, cinnamon, ‘eggs’, and milk.  It will be very thin.

Heat a non-stick pan or crepe maker over med/high heat.

Lightly brush the pan with oil.

Use 1/4 cup batter and swirl it around so that you have a very thin ‘pancake’.

Once it’s almost cooked right through, loosen the edges with a  spatula and flip the crepe to brown the other side.

(I will post a photo next time I make them.  Last time they disappeared before I could shoot them!)
