Book Review – Vitamin Cure for Migraines

October 25, 2010 By //  by Whitney Young, ND

Vitamin cure for migraines: how to prevent and treat migraine headaches by Steve Hickey, Ph.D.

A patient of mine was reading this book and it peaked my interest. What else could I learn about how to treat migraines? The book was well written and most of it could be understood by the typical consumer. The most recent theories behind why we get migraines were discussed. The author concluded that inflammation is a big culprit.

Inflammation causes and worsens many health conditions. When dealing with migraines, he mentioned the importance of decreasing inflammation with vitamins as well as what we actually eat.

I will share one take-home message that you can try on your own if you suffer from migraines.

Avoid Junk Food….seems simple enough. He specifically talked about MSG and Aspartame. These are excitatory and can trigger headaches.

MSG sources:

  • chips, junk food
  • flavour enhancements
  • stock cubes
  • barbecue sauce
  • called “hydrolyzed vegetable protein”
  • “natural flavours”
  • “yeast extract”

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener and found in many diet pops, gum and candy.

Eliminate these two chemicals from your diet first to see if that improves your headaches.
